VK Gallery

My little brooches are heading to VK Gallery in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. It is a new gallery opening in September 2014 by Victoria Mudge. You can read more about the gallery and its artists at www.vkgallery.co.uk
So I have been sewing, stitching and embroidering any moment I can whilst baby sleeps, although he does sometimes get a look in when taking documentary photographs…

As part of the Tour de France stage in Cambridge, Cambridge Contemporary Craft gallery are currently holding a bicycle themed exhibition.  Running from 12 June to 11 July, my hand stitched bicycle brooches shall be in the gallery.  As Cambridge is a city full of bikes it seems right that there is a celebration of all things bicycle related.  Oh, and I couldn’t resist photographing them on a map!

Elephant & Feather have become my latest stockist! They are a brand new shop just recently opened up in the Bedfordshire town of Potton.

Run by graphic designer Rachel Shaw and textile maker Shirley O’Flaherty, Elephant & Feather is a unique gift shop specialising in contemporary and pre loved design from local independent makers.

Weather mobile

One of my latest projects has been making a mobile for the nursery.  I have been wondering what to make as we decided not to find out if our baby is a boy or a girl, and wanted something for either.  With my due date edging nearer I have been trying to get the baby’s room ready for when they say hello to the world.  So with the stormy weather going on outside I have made a calmer version for inside.

Using the inside ring of an embroidery hoop I painted it the same colour as the walls (it’s not easy painting a circle!).  Clouds and raindrops are cut from different shades of blue and grey card, and the sun is a big yellow disc as it’s always there, just sometimes hiding behind the clouds.  They are strung together using clear nylon thread and the patience of a saint to get it all to line up…

Back in the Summer I was very excited to be chosen to be part of the winter exhibition ‘Treasured’ at Hawthorn Contemporary Craft Gallery in Dorset. So since then I have been busy sewing little houses, flowers and birds to send down to Dorset (in between enjoying the shining sun, and marvelling at my ever growing baby bump)

So today is the day that it has all come together, and I took a trip to the post office to send a parcel of brooches, magnets and gift tags.

Hawthorn Contemporary Craft Gallery is run by artist Stephanie Carswell, in Blandford, Dorset. ‘Treasured’ opens on 15th October and runs until Christmas Eve. Visit http://www.hawthorncraft.co.uk for more information.

After having a sort out of buttons I came across these vintage buttons still on their original cards.  The buttons are made from moulded plastic and illustrate the petals and centres of the flowers.  The buttons are beautiful and so are the cards, which always good to display if you can’t bare to part the two.
